First Time at Antalya Airport? 8 Things to Know Before You Land

Landing at Antalya Airport for the first time? Here are 8 practical things about the terminal layout, baggage, money, SIMs, and getting to your resort.

Quick answer

Antalya Airport (AYT) is Turkey's busiest tourist airport, handling over 35 million passengers in peak years. It's functional and well-organized, but it has quirks worth knowing — particularly around terminal layout, peak-season queues, and the geography of where your resort actually is relative to the airport.

1. There are two separate terminal buildings

Antalya Airport has two main terminals that are physically separate buildings connected by a walkway:

  • Terminal 1 handles domestic flights (Turkish Airlines domestic, Pegasus domestic)
  • The International Terminal handles all international arrivals

If you're arriving on an international charter or low-cost flight from Europe, you'll use the International Terminal. If you're connecting from Istanbul domestically, you'll land at Terminal 1. The two terminals are connected, but if you need to cross between them (for an onward connection), allow 15–20 minutes.

Most first-time tourists arriving from Europe go directly to the International Terminal — no confusion required.

2. Baggage claim takes 20–35 minutes

Antalya handles multiple wide-body aircraft simultaneously in peak season. Baggage carousel wait times of 20 to 35 minutes after landing are normal, not a sign of a problem.

If your bag hasn't appeared after 45 minutes, that's when to find the baggage claim desk (each terminal has one, staffed with English speakers).

3. Skip the exchange counters — use the ATMs

The ATMs in the arrivals hall give bank exchange rates. The exchange counters give noticeably worse rates and work on commission.

Turkish lira is what you need for small purchases, transport, and tips. Withdraw a reasonable amount at the ATM and convert what you don't use at the end if needed. Major tourist businesses accept euros and credit cards, but you'll always do better with lira.

4. SIM cards are in the arrivals hall

Turkish SIM cards for tourists are available from kiosks in the international arrivals hall. Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey both have coverage booths. Tourist data packages are genuinely good value: 20–30GB for 7–15 days typically costs €15–€25.

This is worth doing immediately rather than relying on expensive roaming. Turkey's coverage is solid across the coastal resort towns.

5. The taxi queue in summer is real

In July and August, the taxi rank outside Antalya International can have a 30–45 minute queue. This isn't a malfunction — it's the volume of arrivals meeting the available taxi supply.

If you're arriving on a peak-season evening flight alongside five other aircraft, factor this into your plans. A pre-booked transfer with a driver already in the arrivals hall bypasses this entirely.

6. Pre-booked transfers: your driver is inside, not outside

With a pre-booked private transfer, your driver is inside the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name. You exit baggage claim, see your sign, and follow the driver to the car park.

This is meaningfully different from the taxi queue experience — no negotiating, no queue, no ambiguity about the price. The price was set when you booked.

Drivers track flight arrivals in real time. If your flight is delayed 90 minutes, they know before you land.

TaxiPorts covers all major destinations from Antalya Airport (AYT) — from Belek and Side to Alanya and Kemer.

7. Antalya city vs the coastal resorts — they're in different directions

This catches first-timers off guard. Antalya city center (Kaleiçi, the old town, the modern center) is northwest of the airport. The coastal resort strip goes in the opposite direction — east and southeast:

  • Lara Beach: 10 minutes east
  • Kundu / Belek: 35–45 minutes east (large all-inclusive resort zone)
  • Side / Manavgat: approximately 1 hour east
  • Alanya: approximately 1h45–2h30 east (130km)

If your hotel is in Antalya city center, your transfer goes one direction. If it's in Belek or Side, it goes the other. Make sure your transfer booking has the correct hotel address.

8. The resort geography from the airport

A quick reference for where each resort zone sits from Antalya Airport:

| Destination | Distance | Approx. time | |---|---|---| | Lara Beach | 14km | 10–15min | | Belek | 35km | 35–45min | | Side | 75km | 55–75min | | Manavgat | 80km | 60–75min | | Alanya | 130km | 1h45–2h30 | | Antalya city center | 12km | 15–20min | | Kemer | 45km | 40–55min |

FAQ

Is Antalya Airport easy to navigate?

Yes. The International Terminal is large but well-signposted in English. Exit from baggage claim leads directly to the arrivals hall, which opens onto the ground transport area. Even first-timers navigate it without difficulty.

Do I need to print my transfer booking confirmation?

Not strictly — your driver will have your details. But having the driver's name and a contact number on your phone (as a screenshot, not relying on data connection) is sensible practice in case you miss each other in a busy arrivals hall.

Is there a hotel shuttle bus from Antalya Airport?

Many large all-inclusive hotels in Belek and the surrounding resort area operate their own shuttle buses. Check your hotel's arrival information — if they offer one, it's typically free. The trade-off is fixed departure times and potential waiting.

What currency should I have at Antalya Airport?

Turkish lira is essential. Euros are accepted at many tourist-facing businesses, but you'll pay a poor exchange rate. Get lira from the ATM in arrivals — the rates are fair and you'll have local currency for tips, dolmuş rides, and market purchases immediately.

What happens if my luggage is lost?

Report it immediately at the baggage claim office before leaving the secure area. Your PIR (Property Irregularity Report) reference number is required for follow-up. Turkish airport baggage claims have English-speaking staff and the process is standard EU procedure.
